A great twentieth century preacher tells a story that has been recast by hundreds of preachers. The story is about a family on a vacation. The family stops at a Dinner Bell type restaurant in Eastern Tennessee….
Talk about being given an identity! But the greater miracle is that the young boy claimed the identity! It was much better than the one he had carried since his infancy.
We all have identities. Sometimes we think we have one identity when others see us otherwise. Our identities are usually expressed in the language of labels or verbal symbols. The same practice existed in Jesus’ day. In fact, Jesus used a special term to identify his followers. He called them the Kingdom of God. You and I are also recipients of that identity. We are reminded that the Kingdom of God is within you. If that is our identity, how do we claim it? I can visualize three words that help us express our identity as the Kingdom.
I. Vision…Seeing the present in terms of the future.
II. Values…The goose and the golden eggs!
III. Venture…The process of claiming our identity.
